A drug is any substance (not food - though some would probably argue this) that when taken into the body alters its function or impacts on its functioning either physically, psychologically, mentally or emotionally.
Drug Types
Drugs are usually classified according to their effect on the central nervous system. There are 3 primary drug types:
- Stimulant (uppers) These speed you up. They increase central nervous system activity - faster heart rate, pulse and breathing. They can often cause anxiety and panic attacks for the user.
- Depressants (downers) These slow down your central nervous system and slow you down - slower movements, breathing and coordination. These drugs have the added risk of people overdosing from their breathing shutting down.
- Hallucinogens These alter your perceptions of reality - how it appears - on all the body's senses, such as sound, sight, touch, hearing and smell.
